These days, even dinner can turn into a debate. How do we raise thoughtful kids and keep our homes peaceful when the world feels divided? This week, readers write in about balancing love and opinions — without flipping the table.
AskAnissa: The Dinner Debate
Dear Anissa,
My family dinners turn political fast. I love my relatives, but I dread the tension. How do I keep peace without pretending nothing’s wrong?
— Table Talk Tired
Dear Tired,
Every table has a choice — to connect or to convince. Set a “no debate during dinner” rule and instead ask open-ended questions: “What are you grateful for this week?” or “What inspires you lately?” Listening changes more hearts than shouting ever could. On the flip side, not talking about politics is not the answer. Being able to agree to disagree is a very adult thing and can be life changing. Also, remember that hearing each other out helps us understand where the other person is coming from and to see things from their perspective.
Peace isn’t the absence of disagreement; it’s the presence of understanding. Keep your home a refuge — where love outvotes everything else.
